Root Notes is set in a world much like ours, but inhabited by anthropomorphic animals. The story follows Nate Blakeley, a striped skunk and young musician with dreams of grandeur. Nate must navigate his young adulthood and figure out his path in life as he struggles with his relationships, past, and vices in the turbulent 2000s. Nate must learn that not everything is black and white, and he must remember his roots.Root Notes is a love letter to the pop punk and emo scene of the 2000s-2010s. Root Notes takes special focus on the Southern US communities of the subcultures that are often overlooked.
Despite being set in the south, Root Notes is an homage to DIY scenes and local music scenes across the world, and is dedicated to the artists and musicians in those communities who despite the struggles hold onto their roots and keep chasing their dreams.

About the Author

Hello! My name is Morgan Southern! I am an Arkansas based artist with a degree in Graphic Design. I have been a lifelong fan of the punk and emo music, and the DIY communities within those subcultures drive the style and ethos of my work. I believe that art in all forms is a very powerful medium for making change and helping others feel seen.Outside of music, my main inspiration comes from rubberhose and "Funny Animal" cartoons and comics. I also have a deep love for animals and conservation efforts, and a major goal with Root Notes is to highlight endangered species, as well as recently extinct species to draw attention to conservation efforts and to honor the species lost due to human negligence. I also enjoy paleontology and history.
